Top Part-Time Jobs for College Students

Drafted Staff

If you’re a college student, there’s a good chance that you don’t have a job right now. You probably don’t need one right now, either; your focus needs to be on your studies and extracurricular activities first. However, that doesn’t mean that you can’t have a job while still studying or after you graduate. As long as the job matches your interests and skills and you get experience working for someone else, you can have a part-time job while at school. Here are five great part-time jobs for college students:

Working at a coffee shop

Working at a coffee shop can be an excellent way to earn some spending money while also studying the art of making coffee. You’ll learn how to make lattes (or macchiatos or frappes), pour coffee, take orders, clean tables, and more. If you’re averse to the smell of freshly roasted beans, you might find working at a coffee shop too. If you have a particular specialty, like roasting, you could open your own coffee shop. In that case, you’d make a lot more money than you would at a coffee shop, but it would also be far more work. You’d also have to deal with the risks and challenges of running your own business, from finding financing to staffing and customer service.

Tutoring

Tutoring is a legit way to make some extra cash while you’re in school. You can sign up with a company like Tutor.com, which connects students with people who need help with their coursework. You could also look into tutoring at your local community college, as some of their extension programs have a tutoring program. If you have a particular subject that you’re particularly good at, you can offer private tutoring as an additional product. For example, if you’re great at math, you could offer math tutoring. Or, if you’re really good at chemistry and could offer chemistry tutoring, then you’d have a more lucrative business.

Research assistant

A research assistant is someone who helps conduct research. This could be looking through books and articles, reading through old journals and articles, writing down what you find, and so on. You’d basically be doing the work of a research assistant and probably getting paid for it. Some universities have a research assistant program that you can sign up for. Make sure to check for this, especially if you want to work for a university that’s close to home. You could also look for research opportunities on sites like Indeed.com and ProPublica.

Editorial assistant

Many top universities have an editorial assistant program. This is basically a paid internship where you work for a university press, journal, or publishing company and help with the editorial process. You’d be doing a lot of copyediting, proofreading, and editing. Some employers ask for a portfolio of your work so you have to have some published pieces ready to show.

Event planner

A lot of universities have a student association that organizes events and activities. These events are often parties, but they can also be lectures, concerts, or other social events. If this is the type of event that you enjoy, you could plan and organize events for other students. This could help you make some extra money while you’re in school, since you don’t need any special skills for this. You just need to be friendly and willing to help out. However, if you’re planning on going to school for a particular field, you could try to get a job as an event planner in that field after you graduate. There are plenty of employers who are always on the lookout for former students.

Wrapping up

Working while you’re in school is a good way to earn some extra money while you’re also studying and getting college credit. There are plenty of jobs that don’t require a specific degree and can be done while you have a few years of experience under your belt. This can be especially beneficial if you’re taking time off from school and need to make some money quickly.
